Russian Federation blames United States for bombings in Syrian Aleppo
“We’re going to have a serious conversation about all aspects about what’s happening in Syria”, Kerry said as their meeting got under way.
The US secretary of state, John Kerry, who arrived in Germany on Wednesday, had talks planned late in the evening with the United Nations peace envoy Staffan de Mistura and Adel al-Jubeir, the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, a key backer of Syria’s rebel groups.
But he added: “We will take in Syrians who want to come (to Turkey), but as a priority we are building a new camp to accommodate Syrians inside Syria’s borders”.
According to the statement, the sides also reiterated their strong opposition to any preconditions that could hamper the advancement of peace process in the war-torn country.
Aided by Russian airstrikes, the Syrian army is closing in on the last pockets of militant positions in Aleppo which borders Turkey.
The officials said the USA counter-proposal was a simple ceasefire effective immediately and accompanied by full humanitarian access to Syria’s besieged civilian centres.
Around 30,000 Syrians are at the Turkish border after fleeing a Russia-backed regime offensive on the northern region of Aleppo, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on February 8, as his country faces mounting pressure to open its border.
“We are there legally, at the invitation of the Syrian government”.
He said the Russian targets on that day had been at least 20 km (12 miles) from the city.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance agreed Thursday to deploy NATO airborne command and control aircraft in order to free up similar USA aircraft for the air campaign in Syria and Iraq.
Konashenkov said Russia has repeatedly asked the USA and its allies for intelligence in response to the accusations that Russians are targeting the “wrong objects”.
“Through the ongoing onslaught on Aleppo, Russia seeks to tip the balance of power on the ground in favor of the Assad regime, with the aim of imposing a political solution favorable to Russia”, said Khalid Saleh, a member of the main Syrian opposition National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces.
Former FSA chief Gen. Salim Idris, who provides strategic advice to moderate militias, told Voice of America the YPG and its Arab allies in the SDF, with support from Russian warplanes, were launching so-far unsuccessful attacks against the Menagh air base, which anti-Assad rebels captured after a lengthy siege in August 2013. The Kurds appeared to be exploiting the chaos to expand their nearby enclave, known as Afrin.
“What Russia’s doing is directly enabling ISIL”, said Brett McGurk in reference to air strikes carried out by Moscow’s warplanes in and around Aleppo in support of the Damascus regime.
“Ethnic cleansing in Syria and Aleppo aimed at only leaving regime supporters behind is being conducted by the Syrian regime and Russian Federation in a very deliberate way”, he said.
With the Syrian opposition saying it can not accept a truce because it does not trust the Russians, diplomats saw little chance of progress at the meeting in the German city of Munich.
“We have not witnessed such bombardment since the revolution began”, said Abu Thabet referring to the start of the uprising against Assad’s government in March 2011.
