Sean Couturier signed to 6-year, $26 million contract extension with Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers have signed center Sean Couturier to a multiyear contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports that the deal is six years in length and worth $4.33 million per year against the salary cap, or $26 million in total.
Couturier was a solid offensive contributor for the Flyers in 2014-15, tallying 37 points (15 goals, 22 assists) in 82 games with the team. It was the second straight season Couturier played in every game. That became apparent at the 2015 IIHF World Championships – and with three goals and seven points in ten games to show for the gold-medal tournament, the young forward should be given a bigger, better role under new coach Dave Hakstol.
In all, Couturier has collected 45 goals and 73 assists as a Flyer and has added three goals and an assist in 18 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.
With a six year term, the Flyers centre will see his contract expire when he’s 28 – buying the Flyers one year of unrestricted free agency that he won’t drive his price up and holding what could be an extremely reasonable cap hit for one of the league’s most underrated forwards. He has also appeared in 198 consecutive games, which is the third-most active streak on the Flyers (Jakub Voracek: 226 & Brayden Schenn: 208). Couturier signed a two-year contract extension with the club on July 20, 2013. Noted early in his career for his defensive prowess, the organization clearly is committing to his potential as a two-way player with the capability of increasing his offensive output substantially.
