US women’s soccer team wins, earns Olympic berth “Watch”
Canada lost 2-0 to the United States in the final of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament this evening.
With wins Friday over Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively, Canada and the USA have accomplished what they set out to do – earn places in the 12-team Olympic field. Lloyd’s goal against Trinidad & Tobago on February 19 came from an assist from fellow Houston Dash teammate Brian, making for a Dash-to-Dash goal in their home venue at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Since the introduction of major global women’s tournaments 25 years ago, no reigning World Cup champion has won the Olympic title the following summer.
But the two CONCACAF heavyweights relish their scraps, even if the top-ranked Americans have traditionally dominated.
“Canada has some great players”, Costa Rica coach Amelia Valverde said through an interpreter. The pride of the Pride, Morgan is coming off a hat trick against Trinidad and Tobago and the two veterans will need to make their presence felt against Canada. And they helped scuttle Herdman’s plan against a new-look, same-result American side. In fact, it might well be that the less said to any family member about it, particularly the first half, the better. “And it’s a bitter pill to swallow”. “I think they have more of a rivalry with us than we do with them because I think they always want to prove that their growing the game in their country – and they’ve come a long way”. With the exception of the opponents it plays Sunday, CONCACAF can still only delay its best team, not test the United States.
“At some point they’ll be ready for those big games against the U.S.”, Herdman said of his young crew.

The Canadian mantra was summed up by fullback Allysha Chapman. Can we expect a repeat today? Costa Rica score was by forward Raquel Rodriguez Cedeno.
“Qualifying for Rio is the moon landing but it means nothing if you don’t get back”, said Wilkinson.
The U.S. literally is the gold standard of women’s Olympic soccer. After winning gold in Greece and Beijing in 2004 and 2008, the USA women were on the ropes in the 2012 London semifinals, when Christine Sinclair scored three deft and dramatic goals. There is no margin for error in one-and-done games although veteran Diana Matheson says the Canadians handled the pressure well.
Both players watched from the sidelines during the part of Saturday’s practice open to reporters.
Herdman has been digging into his roster throughout the tournament and Sinclair (calf) and McLeod (knee) have had limited training.
He promised some new twists Sunday.
Both teams were dominant en route to the final here.
US midfielder Carli Lloyd tries to negotiate in tight quarters against Canada’s Josee Belanger, left, and Rhian Wilkinson. Canada is 15-2-1 with a 68-11 goals advantage. The Americans kick off the She Believes Cup on March 3, where they’ll face England, France, and Germany – teams ranked 5th, 3rd, and 2nd in the world, respectively.
