Clinton and Trump wins set them on path to be frontrunners
On Saturday, just as SC voters were preparing to cast the first ballots in the state’s primary, Trump reposted a tweet that suggested both Rubio and Ted Cruz are “ineligible” to campaign for the Oval Office. Marco Rubio and Cruz were in a tight race for second place. Lamar Alexander, said Bush made the right decision to drop out of the race, and “conventional wisdom” would indicate Rubio stands to gain much of the former Florida governor’s support.
Clinton and Bernie next face off February 27 in South Carolina’s Democratic primary, where the Republicans on Saturday tapped billionaire Donald Trump as their choice for the nomination.
“I’m proud of the campaign that we have run to unify our country”.
Trump’s win in SC comes day after Trump got into a war of words with Pope Francis, who bashed Trump for his popular policy of building a wall along the Mexico border. “The people of Iowa, New Hampshire, and SC have spoken”, Jeb Bush stated as he announced the end to his presidential bid. Rubio edged out Cruz by two-tenths of one percentage point.
With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton was leading with 52.6 percent of the vote ahead of Vermont Sen.
More money could be on the way for Rubio as the Republican field narrows.
Bush did not wait long to fold. It’s clear to me and, I think, to most observers that the wind is at our backs.
The presidency, Bush said, “is bigger than any one person”. We need to remember here, over 70 percent of Republicans nationally have basically said we’re not voting for Donald Trump. And so far you know I’m really on my way.
“The sooner we coalesce, the better we can do as a party”, he said.
Sanders is expected to lose to Clinton in Saturday’s primary in SC – where the Clintons vacationed when President Bill Clinton was in office – with a heavily black Democratic electorate, a key Clinton constituency.
Also on the horizon: March 1 contests in a dozen states, mostly southern states that somewhat mirror SC, including Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Now the Republican candidates will go to Nevada and the Democrats head to SC.
In any event, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio all claimed success in SC and moved Sunday to take the fight to Nevada and other states that will help decide the matter. “You have to have a true conservative” to win.
