South Africa Confirms First Zika Virus Case
The virus is typically spread by mosquito bites.
Dr. Remley and AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases Vice Chair Yvonne A. Maldonado, M.D., FAAP, recently participated in a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine rapid research workshop on Zika virus that brought experts together to discuss research priorities, clinical management and public health interventions.
State public health officials say there is no cause for alarm.
“As long as the outbreak continues in Central and South America and the Caribbean, we expect to see more travel-related Zika virus infections in our state”, Randall Williams, North Carolina’s state health director, said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
Aylward also pointed to the “probability” that the Zika virus will have “gone through” a large slice of the country’s population by then, so many Brazilians might have developed an immunity to the disease by the time of the Aug.5-21 games.
“This is not a virus that is in our mosquitoes, nor is there any risk of getting it here in Iowa”, Quinlisk says.

The Tulsa Health Department will launch a new campaign in coming weeks to warn high school and college students about the growing risk of catching the Zika Virus if they plan to travel over spring break.
Zika is generally transmitted through a mosquito bite.
The news about the Ontario case comes as insect scientists at Brock University in St. Catharines have received a shipment of the virus to test whether mosquitoes native to Canada could become infected with the pathogen and potentially transmit it to humans.
“In many ways the Zika outbreak is worse than the Ebola epidemic of 2014-15”, said Jeremy Farrar, head of the Wellcome Trust, an independent global charitable foundation dedicated to improving health. Symptoms of the virus include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.
The Institute said 6,356 of the 37,011 Zika cases recorded so far involve pregnant women.
Jackeline, 26, holds her 4-month-old son, who was born with microcephaly, in Olinda, Brazil.
The virus is also believed to be tied to a rise in cases of the paralysis-causing Guillain-Barre syndrome in eight countries, including Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador and Venezuela.
