What We Know: Gunman arrested in deaths of 6 in MI
Four bullets flew into a closet of George’s home, she said. He wasn’t a known troublemaker.
Dalton picked up and dropped off passengers between shootings, CNN reported, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the investigation.
He was arrested over the shootings at three different locations in Kalamazoo, with no apparent links to the victims.
The gunman’s first victim was a woman who was with her three children outside an apartment complex when she was shot, he said. The woman is expected to survive, cops said. Five people – including a girl – in two separate cars were shot and killed, Michigan State Police Lt. Dale Hinz told WOOD. He said he called the police and that when he got to his friend’s house, his fiancée posted a warning to friends on Facebook. “This wasn’t hurried in any way, shape or form”.
Jeffrey Getting, the Kalamazoo County prosecutor, grew emotional at a news conference on Sunday morning as he described the chaotic scene and the scramble by the police to respond to the shootings and find the gunman.
NBC News reports that about three hours later, police were then called to Seelye Kia dealership located at 3820 Stadium Dr.in Kalamazoo.
Jason Dalton, 45, is shown in this booking photo provided by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office in Kalamazoo, Michigan February 21, 2016.
“There’s this sense of loss, there’s this anger, there’s fear, there’s all these emotions”, Mr. Getting said. Two more victims – Tyler Smith, 17, and his father, Richard, 53 – were shot dead outside a auto dealership. Around 10 to 15 minutes later, a few miles away from the dealership, he shot at four other victims outside Cracker Barrel restaurant. Authorities identified them as Dorothy Brown, 74; Barbara Hawthorne, 68; Mary Lou Nye, 62; and Mary Jo Nye, 60.
A 14-year-old girl wounded at the restaurant was hospitalized in critical condition.
As stated, Dalton, 45, is a former insurance adjuster who was working as an Uber driver.
Mellen said he jumped out of the auto at 4:30 pm, and called the emergency phone number 911. Getting said a semiautomatic pistol was found in Dalton’s vehicle. “I was freaking out”.
Before Saturday, Dalton had no criminal history and passed an Uber background check.
Dalton told the couple he had been driving for seven hours that day, which is how long police say the shooting rampage lasted.
“We are horrified and heartbroken at the senseless violence in Kalamazoo, Michigan”, Uber Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan said in a statement.
Hadley said it was not unusual for police to receive such reports and that he was not sure whether investigators had contacted the passenger who made the report.
“Police pulled the vehicle over without incident”, said Kalamazoo County prosecutor Jeff Getting. He said Dalton is likely the only person who will face charges. Dalton was arrested Sunday after the wave of attacks that took place on Saturday evening and it seems as he acted alone on the killings. “It is extremely frustrating in terms of not having at least a reason why”.
In the suspect’s Kalamazoo neighborhood, residents said they never saw Dalton distressed. It was just very calm and quiet.
“My heart truly goes out to them”, he said.
How many more victims might have been killed if police didn’t catch the suspect.
As authorities look for the reasons why Dalton allegedly embarked on a mass shooting spree over the weekend, the ride-hailing service Uber is addressing his record as a driver with the company. But it doesn’t explain the rampage. Formal charges will be brought Monday, he said, when Dalton is expected to be arraigned.
