Snapchat now lets you create your own Geofilters for parties and events
Folks looking to promote their next big block-party, wedding or musical shindig can now get in on Snapchat’s action with these new temporary geofilters for the popular photo-sharing service.
SnapchatAn example of a geofilter for a proposal. So your room can’t have its own geofilter, but your dorm can.
Prior to this announcement, the company only allowed users to overlay their photos with filters paid for by brands (also called sponsored geofilters) or ones that were specific to their location (community geofilters).
Snapchat users can now design and buy customized filters that they can then make available in certain geographic areas for limited amounts of time.
For those unaware, geofilters are the things that appear in Snapchat when you swipe to the left on an image and you’re in a valid location.
Starting today, however, Snapchatters in the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Canada can make On-Demand Geofilters for private use, such as a throwing a wedding, hosting a party, or promoting a sale for their local business. You can expand that sizing up to 5 million square feet, which Snapchat says will be enough to cover several city blocks. After you design your filter (Snapchat is offering up some templates to get you started), pick the map area and filter duration, you submit it to get it approved. Pricing starts at $5, and depends on the size of the area in which users want the filter to be available as well as the length of availability.
The feature is available now in the U.S., U.K., and Canada with more locations “coming soon”.
