Robert William Pickton book stirs outrage
Within hours, the book, entitled Pickton: In His Own Words, had been removed from sale.
The book is said to include Biblical passages and claims Pickton’s innocence in the crimes. “He insinuates, without evidence, that the motorcycle gang The Hells Angels was behind some of the killings”, says the CTV report.
Pickton: In His Own Words had been available for $20.17 on Amazon since yesterday.
Cameron, who is now working on a book about the former maximum-security Kingston Penitentiary, said inmates’ correspondences are closely monitored by prison guards.
Toronto criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind says it’s “unfortunate” no laws exist in British Columbia and criticized its government for not following suit with what other provinces are doing.
“I’m glad to see that the province has put out a statement recognizing the seriousness of this, but I think we need to go further” said Farnworth.
In 2007, Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and is serving a life sentence in B.C. He was accused of murdering up to 49 women.
As of noon Monday, Pickton’s book had amassed 91 customer reviews on Amazon, and it had earned 1.3 stars.
The Californian had no prior publishing experience, but he said he took on the project as a “favour” to his friend, who met Pickton at B.C.’s Kent Institution and is now incarcerated in a Saskatchewan penitentiary for sexually assaulting a child.
In November, infamous Ontario rapist and murderer Paul Bernardo released a fictional e-book called A MAD World Order on Amazon, but it was quickly pulled offline due to public outrage. She said she found it “very weird” that a hand-written manuscript of the book managed to make its way outside of the prison. Sandra Gagnon, whose sister Janet Henry’s disappearance is widely believed linked to Pickton, told the C, “It really disgusts me knowing that the worst serial killer in history has the nerve to write that book and reopen wounds”.
While families of the victims and those close to the case are upset by the publication, Pickton is not the first killer to pen a manuscript.
Jason Gratl said he hopes that Pickton has made a mistake – and has given away something he didn’t intend.
