Cyanogen wants to eradicate apps, replace them with system ‘mods’
We’ve seen plenty of enhancements to Android too, not just new features, such as further improved app protection in Marshmallow as well as the TrueCaller dialer to help better identify unknown callers.
Mods are basically “intelligent, aware, and lightweight experiences” that are found outside the app world and inside your device’s OS, baked directly into it. This integrated mobile platform is meant to revolutionize how users, developers, OEMs, and MNOs will interact with the smartphone and/or the tablet. MOD is expected to roll out to users with the Cyanogen OS 13 update next month, so this is something that users can look forward to in the future.
Cyanogen has launched the a MOD platform, which will enable developers to integrate apps directly in the Cyanogen OS.
The Windows-maker seem to be a premium launch partner for MOD, having already created a bunch of applications and scenarios where the company’s services get embedded into Cyanogen OS.
From a user standpoint, you can download and install the mods you want to use on your device.
MOD is the latest salvo from a company that has raised 0 million in venture capital to develop a distinctly different version of Android that undercuts Google’s advantage in giving away the free operating system. This includes possibilities like changing the default Android dialer, embedding apps deeper into the OS, and so on.
Engadget noted that Android has always been the mobile OS of choice for developers, a trend that also directly led to Cyanogen’s success as a custom operating system. But apps, as they exist today, can be boring and single-minded.
Cyanogen will be offering a Platform Development Kit or PDK to its partners as part of the MOD Ready program. The evolution to MOD is the next chapter in this journey, enabling our customers to choose the services they love and have them natively integrated on the device. Microsoft’s OneNote is also another app that will be the first to go through the MOD platform. That said, Cyanogen says that it anticipates over a dozen “MOD Ready” devices launching starting in March. The MOD platform is evolved from the market leading Android-based Cyanogen OS, which is known for its revolutionary personalization features, intuitive interface, speed, improved battery life, and enhanced security.
