Uber says it got complaints about alleged shooter
The Kalamazoo shootings come as Uber is facing a range of regulatory and safety issues.
The gunman shot eight people in three different parts of the county Saturday evening, authorities said.
In between shootings, the Uber driver picked up fares, according to a source close to the investigation. Authorities say four women were killed as they sat in two cars: Dorothy Brown, 74; Barbara Hawthorne, 68; Mary Lou Nye, 62; and Mary Jo Nye, 60.
“And I halfheartedly joked at him and said…” He showed no emotion as the charges against him were read.
Bond was also denied for Dalton.
The only thing apparently connecting the victims?
Dalton admitted “that he took people’s lives”, Kalamazoo police Det.
Minutes after that, five people were shot in a parking lot at a restaurant.
“There are no words which can express our shock and disbelief and we are devastated and saddened for the victims and the families of the victims”, the statement says.
“We are horrified and heartbroken at the senseless violence in Kalamazoo, Michigan”.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says Uber is cooperating with law enforcement officials investigating the shootings, and he believes the company will “help us fill in some timeline gaps”.
Uber officials told reporters Monday that they were devastated by what had happened but had no plans to change their background check methods. The former Uber driver is suspected of killing victims “at random” across Kalamazoo County during a Saturday night shooting spree.
“Intentional, deliberate, it’s cold, this was not just a momentary lapse”, Getting said.
The random shooting incidents began around 6 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex.
Police were first called to an apartment complex where a woman was shot multiple times.
The surviving victim from the Cracker Barrel shooting is a 14-year-old who is in critical condition, said state police.
Dalton, who was wearing glasses, took a deep breath when the judge announced that the charges included the attempted murder of a 14-year-old girl. Her family identified her as Abigail Kopf. Uber has a dedicated law enforcement team in place that was able to respond immediately, he said. “This wasn’t hurried in any way, shape or form”, Getting told CNN Monday.
One passenger told NBC affiliate WoodTV that he and his family made a decision to get an Uber home at around midnight after hearing about the shootings. Mellen said that after Dalton hung up, he began driving erratically, driving through stop signs and sideswiping other cars. “He was surprisingly calm the whole time”.
Mellen said he jumped out of the vehicle at 4:30 p.m., and called the emergency phone number 911.
On Monday afternoon, Joe Sullivan, Uber’s chief security officer, said that the driver’s rampage could not have been predicted, noting that “overall, his rating was good”.
“I want to get to the source of the problem and figure out how we can make a difference”, Rep. Bishop said, “and get to these people before they erupt”. Hadley says Dalton has no known criminal history.
