Camille Cosby to be deposed again March 14
Lawyers for Camille Cosby, wife and longtime bujsiness manager of entertainerBill Cosby, tried over the weekend to avoid her testifying under oath Monday at a deposition by arguing the unsecured venue created “an unnecessary media circus and personal security threat that serves no goal other than to harass and embarrass her”.
U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni late Sunday night ordered the entertainer’s wife late to give testimony on Monday about her husband.
Joseph Cammarata, the women’s lawyer, said Cosby is the one person who can speak to her husband’s truthfulness.
Still, Klieman said Camille Cosby can answer questions about her anything she saw or heard, other than conversations with her husband.
More than 50 women have come forward nationally to accuse the 78-year-old television legend of sexual assault in allegations spanning decades, and yet Mrs Cosby has stuck by her man. Cammarata says, “I intend to do what I need to do for my clients”.
Cosby’s lawyers have said in court papers the deposition is “nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to pressure (the) defendant in the face of subjecting his wife to the shame and embarrassment of responding to questions about his alleged infidelities and sexual misconduct”.
The defamation suit connected to the Monday deposition was brought against Cosby in late 2014 by Tamara Green, who was later joined by seven more co-plaintiffs.
Camille does have the right not to answer questions, but Cammarata notes that her rights are limited and could result in a second deposition if a judge disagrees with any questions she decides not to answer.
It is unlikely that the public will know what was said during the deposition of Camille Cosby for quite some time, if ever. “We expect to probe carefully and respectfully”. According to Cammarata, who has sworn his intent to do what needs to be done for his clients, “She doesn’t want to be here”.
Under Massachusetts law, spouses can not be compelled to testify against one another in criminal cases.
When asked afterward about her demeanor under questioning, he replied, “She was someone that was reserved, and I got the sense she really didn’t want to be there”.
The sexual assault case against Bill Cosby will go back to court next month.
Eight women claim Cosby let his defense team paint them as liars after they accused him of sexual assault.
Now that the plaintiffs in the civil case against Cosby have succeeded in getting Camille Cosby deposed, both the civil and criminal complaints against Bill could be impacted.
A judge earlier this month denied a motion by Cosby’s lawyers to dismiss the charges and scheduled a preliminary hearing for March 8.
