Dancing 106-year-old meets President Obama
At 106 years old, she’s seen more than a dozen presidents come and go, but Mdm Virginia McLaurin says she can finally die happy after meeting President Barack Obama.
Subsequently, Obama invited her to the White House for 2016’s Black History Month celebrations, and she was overwhelmed with the enormity of what she was experiencing.
“We’re so happy to have you here”, the fashion forward First Lady said, before noticing Virginia’s purple manicure. “And I’m here to celebrate black history”. The president laughed and grasped her arms.
“For those of you who think that I’m just a big government insane liberal, you know … we crunch some numbers around here”.
In 2013, the Washington DC resident was honoured for volunteering 40 hours each week with students who lived with severe mental and physical disabilities.
“I’m fine”, she said.

Virginia was 104 at the time, and two years later, she rushed to hug the First Lady as the President of the United States followed her quick steps, saying “Slow down now, don’t go too quick”. Independent news organisations weren’t allowed to see or record what the White House described as a private moment.
Mixed in with the joy was an poignant recognition of what Obama’s presidency has meant beyond matters of war, policy and civil liberties.
Her petition didn’t garner enough signatures to meet the White House threshold for an official response, but it didn’t keep her from securing an invitation to Thursday’s reception, where Mr Obama reflected on the legacy of U.S. slavery and called America “a constant work in progress”.
Born in SC, she worked as a seamstress for most of her life and has been widowed for 70 years. “I felt like I made it”, McLaurin said.
