Cruz Communications Director Dismissed for Misquoting Rubio
Cruz did speak highly of Tyler and acknowledged the ordeal was simply a “grave error in judgment”. “It turned out the news story he sent around was false”.
Senator Ted Cruz, the Evangelical choice for the Republican nomination, has parted ways with his longtime campaign spokesman Rick Tyler, according to CNN. “I assumed wrongly that the story was correct”, Tyler said in his apology.
The 21-second video offered an exchange unthinkable for a candidate trying to court evangelical voters as he seeks to consolidate support among the Republican establishment: Sen.
Social media erupted, as did Rubio’s campaign, complaining about the “dirty tricks” that he, Donald Trump and Ben Carson have accused the Cruz campaign of engaging in through the course of the primaries, especially suggesting that Carson was about to drop out of the race in Iowa.
The billionaire, who many are tipping to win in Nevada, immediately seized on the controversy in a tweet.
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz asked for his communications director to resign after he shared a video from the Daily Pennsylvanian.
In a note placed atop the story, the student paper’s editor said that the publication has been receiving many questions about the video, as some have disagreed with its transcript. Rubio, campaigning in Las Vegas, Nev. ahead of Tuesday’s Republican caucus there, said the incident is just another example of the “deceptive” practices Cruz has employed during the campaign.
“It is why, when other campaigns attack us personally, impugn my integrity or my character, I don’t respond in kind”, the Texas senator continued. “We are going to stay focused on issues and substance and record”. Businessman Donald Trump (C) agreed with Rubio’s assessment that Cruz was engaged in a pattern of unethical campaigning. In particular, Cruz faced criticism in Iowa for sending out a controversial “voter violation” mailer.
This whole episode is obviously bad for Cruz for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that he’s losing one of his top campaign officials.
“That’s why I’m asking for Rick Tyler’s resignation”, he said.
We watched the brief Daily Pennsylvanian video on its site and couldn’t make out precisely what Rubio said. “Who was held accountable for the robocalls, and who was held accountable for the commercials on television that they had to pull down?”
Rick Tyler had publicly and profusely apologized for claiming that Marco Rubio had insulted the Bible.
In the video, Rubio confidently strolls into a hotel lobby past Rafael Cruz – the father of rival Sen.
With two words, Rubio went from zero to hero.
But both actions reflect the rigid and fairly narrow case on which Cruz has rested his candidacy – that he is the purest conservative and the one who is most committed to his faith.
