Key Events in Fatal Michigan Shooting Rampage
Dalton’s Uber fare: ‘You’re not the shooter, are you?’
Fuller said investigators are particularly interested in communication between Dalton and Uber, as well as between the company and customers he might have driven.
Sullivan said he’s satisfied with the company’s response to the tragedy.
“So that’s an area where we need to partner and think about what we can do in a common sense way, in a bipartisan way, without some of the ideological rhetoric that so often surrounds that issue”.
The six victims have been identified as Richard Smith, 53, Tyler Smith, 18, Mary Lou Nye, 62, Mary Jo Nye, 60, Barbara Hawthorne, 68, and Dorothy Brown, 74. He reportedly shot his victims at a townhouse development, outside an auto dealership, and in the parking lot of a chain restaurant.
The man accused of killing six people and seriously wounding two others in a mass shooting in Kalamazoo on Saturday has been arraigned in district court.
Prosecutors are charging Dalton with six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and eight firearm-related counts. Dalton was then denied bail and given a March 3 date for his next hearing.
“We are reaching out to these victims and offering all the resources of the Prosecutor’s Office to help them at this very hard time”, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeffrey Getting stated in a Monday release that came along with a copy of the three-page criminal complaint.
Meanwhile police call the 14-year-old who survived the slaughter shines as a ray of hope through the tragedy. Dalton said “yes” when the judge asked if he understood the charges against him. He has been ordered held without bond and will be represented by a court-appointed attorney.
Michigan State Police said the first shooting was reported at 5:42 p.m., after a woman was shot multiple times in an apartment complex parking lot. Authorities did not provide a motive for what they said was his targeting of victims with no apparent connection to him or to each other in the Saturday night shootings.
A little more than four hours later and 15 miles away, a father and his 18-year-old son were fatally shot while looking at cars at a auto dealership. The witness tells NPR that he rode with Dalton shortly before the suspect was arrested in the center of town – and that they briefly discussed the shootings.
Sally Pardo told CNN that Dalton is married with two children and that they seemed to be a “typical American family”.
After combing state records, 24 Hour News 8 found Dalton does not have a criminal history in MI or Indiana.
For the past 10 years, Sally and Gary Pardo have lived across the street from Dalton’s single-family home on Douglas Street in Kalamazoo. As one previous passenger tells WWMT.com West Michigan, Dalton appeared upset and angry and drove erratically just six hours before his arrest.
“He wouldn’t stop. He just kind of kept looking at me like – “don’t you want to get to your friend’s house” and I’m like I want to get there alive”, Mellen said. Mellen said he unsuccessfully tried to contact Uber about Dalton after talking to police. Company officials say people have access to 911 on their cell phones and a panic button to alert Uber dispatchers would not be able to compete with 911.
