Hillary Clinton Wins Nevada Caucuses
It’s important to note, first of all, that polling shortly before the caucuses began showed a surprisingly close race among nonwhite voters.
CLINTON: And this one’s for you. She declared victory a short time ago in Las Vegas. The Nevada senator’s support could be critical to Rubio’s fortunes in the state two days before the GOP caucus. Clinton won big among black voters, and though exit polls showed Sanders winning the Latino vote, a significant accomplishment for his campaign, some experts questioned whether the information was accurate. And I do want to mention that he has acknowledged the Clinton victory.
This is not what the results from the Democratic Nevada caucuses were supposed to look like. Both Trump and Bernie Sanders, who has made surprising gains against Clinton without near as many large donations, have proved the American public will not be satisfied with regurgitated promises.
Silver notes that betting markets have Trump’s chances of being the nominee at 50 percent, Rubio’s at 40 percent, and everyone else’s at 10 percent, which he says sounds about right.
“We were taking on a candidate who ran in 2008”. A sample of precincts that has three heavily Hispanic precincts in one election year and only one in the following year could suggest a drop in turnout among Hispanics, for example, but that finding would be better chalked up to sampling error than any real change in the electorate.
Barack Obama was widely credited with empowering young voters and channeling their energy to power his upset win in the Democrat primary. West followed up with a visit to the campus last month that produced “a pretty good turnout”, she said. “We did well and better than we thought in rural areas, which I was very happy to hear”.
The epic Bush crash in some ways makes Hillary’s early success even that much more impressive, while being a reminder that unlike Bush, Clinton has been part of two successful Presidencies. Her campaign is hoping the win will serve to undercut Sanders’ momentum as they head next into several delegate-heavy contest.
Age, then, not gender, is the dispositive factor in whether a Democrat supports Sanders or Clinton. And Clinton won those voters by a 2-to-1 margin. Marlon Kimpson, who represents the district where a mass shooting left nine dead past year, to hammer Sanders’ mixed support for gun-control measures. Older Hispanics, meanwhile, preferred Hillary Clinton – though apparently not as broadly as did black voters. He did win among Hispanics by 53 percent to 45 percent.
While visiting workers at the Iron Workers Local 7 headquarters in Boston Monday afternoon, Sanders pledged to stay in the Democratic nomination fight with Hillary Clinton for a long, state-by-state slog.
In Nevada, for example, Sanders lost to the former secretary of state by more than five percentage points but still came away with nearly as many delegates as she did, taking 15 to her 19. She had attacked Sanders for coming to the issue late.
