Man says he called cops on driver before attacks
Dalton’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 3. Cory Ghiringhelli told the court had admitted to investigators “that he took people’s lives”.
If he’s convicted, the murder charges carry a mandatory life sentence. MI has no death penalty.
The fact that one of Uber’s drivers was accused of carrying out mass murder and picking up Uber passengers all in one night will not lead the company to change its security policies.
Getting said Dalton was thought to have been in contact with more than one person via cellphone during the shooting spree.
Derek says he sat in the front seat while his wife and in-laws sat in the back. “We were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn speeding along and then finally, once he came to a stop, I jumped out of the auto and ran away”. He confirmed that a man did call police with a report of an erratic Uber driver and the report was relayed to patrol officers.
Initial checks with a key federal agency indicate Dalton was unknown to both law enforcement and counterterrorism agencies for having any known connection to extremist groups.
Dalton passed a background check and became a driver on January 25. “That’s very hard for a rapidly growing company, and the bigger the company the harder it is to do”, Adamson said.
Dalton, who had given more than 100 rides since starting with Uber at the end of January, had a rating of 4.73 and had received generally positive feedback from passengers.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said Uber is cooperating with law enforcement officials, and he believes the company will “help us fill in some timeline gaps”. But the company was able to provide assistance to authorities immediately, he said, and Global Positioning System tracking of Dalton’s vehicle is also supporting the investigation.
Police have not provided a motive.
“Our hope is for peace and healing for the victims, the families of the victims, the Kalamazoo community and those touched by these events throughout the nation”, the family says in the statement.
Though police officials relayed to the court that Dalton had admitted to the murder spree, Dalton apparently also remained silent when asked about any motive. “I said, “Are you sure?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not, I’m just tired” And we proceeded to have a pretty normal conversation after that”.
Some four hours later, father and teenage son Rich and Tyler Smith were shot dead in the lot of a local Kia auto dealership. Four of them died. But they would not say whether anyone at the company spoke to Dalton.
In February 2015, Uber introduced the button as a pilot program in India after a driver brutally raped a passenger. But there was no indication that he was prohibited from owning the weapons, said Donald Dawkins, a Detroit-based spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which was assisting police.
Dalton’s family, in an unsigned statement released through a Kalamazoo attorney’s office, expressed “shock and disbelief” at the shooting and said they were “devastated and saddened” for the victims. “If someone with poor mental health hasn’t acted out in the past, they’ll make it through the check”, he said. “None of the things we did do in this case, if we had done them any better, would have made any difference”, Sullivan said.
