Blues G Elliott leaves game with apparent injury
The Sharks’ emotional pendulum started swinging in a positive direction on Monday morning, when management acquired a couple needed pieces in the hopes of setting up a long playoff run.
The game turned quickly after Reaves’ hit on San Jose’s Matt Tennyson 7 minutes, 36 seconds into the game. “That’s the way things have been going right now”.
“I haven’t played in a month and a half”, Allen said. “He’ll get rested up and hopefully be back quicker than what it looked like”.
Reaves was given a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct.
Colorado is far from the defensive powerhouse that St. Louis is as they rank 21st in goals against, and they were lit up by this same San Jose team last time they met. The Sharks destroyed the Avalanche by a 6-1 margin just before the All-Star break as team teal put on an offensive clinic.
“After a teammate goes down and you see him on the ice and he’s kind of motionless and bleeding, you can fold the tent pretty quickly”, said Logan Couture, who scored twice.
“It would be nice to have one”, he said.
San Jose wrapped up the first period with a 3-1 advantage thanks to a pair of power-play goals (and Hertl’s early tally).
Coincidentally enough, Thornton’s most recent four-point effort also came in St. Louis on October 15, 2013. That was also the game where Maxim Lapierre concussed Dan Boyle with a hit from behind into the boards.
The hit on Tennyson occurred on the same end of the ice, likely sparking some bad memories.
Thornton also had two assists as San Jose improved to 21-9-2 on the road, matching their total road wins from last season.
“It was”, Thornton agreed. Reaves will most likely be suspend for a few games which will leave the blues down yet another player as well as losing a league leading goaltender.
Still, the Blues, who had won five straight, pushed. His first came 7:26 into the third period and gave the Sharks a 5-2 lead.
But Couture scored 20 second later to give the Sharks another two goal lead.
Couture now has 12 points (5g, 7a) in his last eight games.
Elliott thought about staying in the game, but was lifted for Jake Allen, who had just returned from the Injured Reserve list.
“Yeah, it was a big goal”, Couture said. Twenty seconds later, Couture would gain back San Jose’s two goal lead after beating a screened Allen.
With the road trip concluding in Colorado, the Sharks will face an Avalanche team that possesses plenty of offensive firepower led by Matt Duchene.
“It was a wild ride, but we found another way to get another win and five in a row is a good feeling”.
That was encouraging to DeBoer, particularly considering how eventful the day was.
