Product recall Mars orders mass recall on chocolate bars
That Mars bar in your lunchbox may be mighty tempting, but it might not be safe; USA chocolate giant Mars has ordered a massive, 55 country-wide product recall, after plastic was found in one of its chocolate bars.
Mars is recalling chocolate products including Celebrations, Mars Funsize, Milky Way Funsize and Snickers Miniatures from shelves as it is feared they might contain plastic which could lead to choking. But it also extended as far as Vietnam and Sri Lanka in Asia.
Roel Govers, spokesman for Mars in the Netherlands, told the Associated Press that the recall affects 55 countries. In its German factory at Viersen alone, Mars produces around 10 million snacks daily. After he complained to Mars, the plastic was traced back to Veghel which determined that it came from a protective cover used in the plant’s manufacturing process.
Mars Netherlands said it was working closely with the Dutch food safety authority on the matter, according to the statement.
It is not known how many products are affected, but the US-based company has warned that chocolates listed in the recall must not be eaten.
