Wenger: Arsenal director went overboard with £200m comment
Arsene Wenger has been presented by the club an excess of £200million as suggested by Arsenal director Lord Philip Harris.
As with previous years, the final preparations will see Wenger spend this weekend assessing just how sharp his current crop of stars are when they take to the turf at their home ground in north London alongside Lyon, Villarreal and Wolfsburg for the 2015 Emirates Cup.
“We would go into the market and probably buy any player in the world, apart from half a dozen who are unbuyable”.
“You can be bankrupt and have £200 million in the bank”.
Mesut Ozil is now the most expensive player in Arsenal’s history after the Gunners paid £42.4m to bring him to England from Real Madrid in 2013.
Injuries might have played a part in Arsenal not finishing higher, but they have taken care of a few problems this season, well one problem that is their goalkeeping position with the signing of Petr Cech.
Raheem Sterling (remember him?) completed his £49m move to Manchester City last week, but they were not the only Premier League club interested in his services.
Now he is set to leave the Emirates Stadium – but Wenger wants to see him return and believes a player he has shown faith in for some time can still produce the goods for Arsenal. Apart from Messi and Ronaldo, he could have any player.
And, knowing Wenger as we should after nearly two decades at the club, he is developing a youngster – the 19-year-old Chuba Akpom.
Harris had also said that a centre-forward was on Wenger’s wanted list.
So as night follows day, Wenger was asked to comment on the agent of Benzema saying that his client was “one thousand per cent” certain to stay at Real Madrid.
“We have built up something special last season, that is a good team dynamic and confidence level”. I do not come out with names anyway. “It’s down to us as individuals to make that place ours but I’m up for the challenge and I’m sure the other boys are as well”.
Is there a single pundit, player, manager or football fan who does not think that Arsenal have been enormously strengthened by the arrival of Petr Cech? I don’t want to go too much into it. He offers numerous same qualities – the ability to hold the ball up well, link up play, and finish off chances – while also being more mobile on the pitch with a tendency to skip past defenders with the ball.
