Political Pundits: Trump Victory Perilous For Republicans
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally Monday yesterday in Las Vegas.
For Trump, that’s a five-point gain in support from the beginning of this month just after the Iowa caucus and right before the New Hampshire primary when it was Trump 31%, Rubio 21% and Cruz 20% among likely GOP voters.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, another GOP presidential contender, has also joined Trump in his attacks of Cruz, calling the Texas senator a liar during the last GOP debate. Cruz, seeking to recover from a disappointing third place in SC, has stressed the fact that he is the one candidate who has prevailed in a contest with Trump with a triumph in the Iowa caucuses.
Though polls were relatively accurate in predicting Trump’s victories in SC and New Hampshire, such surveys don’t capture the potential for new developments to shake up the race.
McCarthy, the No. 2 Republican in the House, said Monday that Trump’s victory in the SC primary Saturday dealt a blow to Texas Sen. He was also behind retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson in Colorado, though the only poll listed for that state was from November, when Carson soared to first place nationally.
Ridge had been supporting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for president since early 2015 and joined him on the campaign trail in SC.
“I don’t even know what the hell they’re talking about”, Trump said of the ad. “It’s a Cruz scam!”
Speaking during a campaign stop in Elko, Nevada, on Monday, Rubio criticized Cruz for the tweet alleging that the Florida senator had insulted the Bible. These superdelegates can support whomever they choose regardless of who wins their states.
Marco Rubio says he’s “anti-prostitution”. Yes, Cruz is famously disruptive, putting his own grandstanding ahead of the good of the party as a whole.
Her campaign said Nevada and the February 27 primary in SC, where she is leading in polls, would showcase her ability to turn out minorities and more moderate voters.
Cruz’s aides have said Rubio’s support comes from more moderate Republicans while their candidate’s backing stems from conservatives such as state Assemblyman Ira Hansen, a Republican who represents Sparks, just east of Reno.
Since Friday, Rubio has added 12 new Congressional or gubernatorial endorsements, while Trump and Cruz have added none. “Feel the Bern” could be snubbed out in South Carolina’s Democratic primary on Saturday and three days later on Super Tuesday, where the South is another Clinton stronghold.
Cruz called out Trump for shifting his position on federal lands, citing a video of Trump being asked about the issue.
