Colorado Woman Who Cut Stranger’s Baby From Womb Convicted of Attempted Murder
A Colorado jury on Tuesday convicted a woman of attempted murder and assault for stabbing a pregnant stranger and cutting her fetus from her womb, after luring the victim to her home with an online advertisement for free maternity clothes.
Ms Wilkins later read a statement to media in response to the guilty verdict of her attacker.
Lane is charged with attempted murder, unlawful termination of a pregnancy and four counts of felony assault.
After the verdict was read, Wilkins thanked the first responders, police officers and civil servants who helped her after she was attacked, “You have my gratitude”.
Lane lured Michelle Wilkins, 27, to her home through a Craigslist ad for maternity clothes.
She said Wilkins’s family was kind and gracious enough to let her speak with Wilkins, and Wilkins later reached out to Kemper, and the two have since become friends.
Lane will be sentenced on April 29.
Lane rushed to the hospital with the fetus, claiming she had a miscarriage.
“If her intent was that I am going to kill this woman, to cut her baby out, why wouldn’t she have one weapon on her?”
That is when Wilkins said that Lane hit her over the head and attacked her, while she told the woman; “I love you”. Early on I had said I had forgiven her. It’s part of who I am as a human being.
The case sparked controversy after Mr. Garnett declined to charge Lane on a second count of first-degree attempted murder because there was no proof the baby was alive after being removed from Ms. Wilkins’ womb.
While her physical wounds have healed, Wilkins said she continues to suffer from post traumatic stress and bouts of uncontrollable sadness.
After the hearing Ms Wilkins spoke to reporters, saying “I do not hate Dynel, but I am angry for all the pain she caused”.
That roiled anti-abortion groups and prompted Colorado Republicans to introduce legislation that would have allowed prosecutors to file murder charges for killing a fetus, but Democrats rejected the measure.
The defense, on the other hand, argued that they believe Lane is guilty of attempted manslaughter but is not guilty of attempted murder.
“There is nothing ever in any shape or form that can remotely prepare you for something like this”, Wilkins said Tuesday afternoon.
According to prosecutors, texts between Lane and her boyfriend show she was too calm for her not to have meant to attack.
When she awoke some time later, Wilkins said that she immediately noticed “a really big cut across my stomach”. Defense attorney Kate Herold told jurors that it was impulsive and reckless and Lane would have had a weapon rather than just grabbing things that were accessible if she had planned the attack.
Once inside the home, police say Wilkins was brutally attacked.
Lane did not testify and the defense rested without calling any witnesses. But when 10 months passed and she hadn’t given birth, he told her he needed answers from a doctor about the baby or he would leave her. Lane eventually pushed Wilkins into a bedroom and ended up on top of her, straddling her chest and pinning her to the ground, Wilkins said.
