Grothman skeptical of plan to close Guantanamo Bay
President Barack Obama’s call to shutter the USA military prison at Guantanamo Bay on Tuesday reignited GOP rallying cries on the campaign trail to preserve the detention facility, NBC News reported.
“President Obama’s decision to close Guantanamo and transfer radical terrorists onto USA soil is another demonstration of weakness from a leader that refuses to accept how unsafe the world really is”, said the first-term Republican congressman.
In an appearance at the White House, Obama said that his plan will “save” money and asked legislators for an “honest” dialogue on closing the prison, located in Cuba, which still holds 91 detainees. Remaining detainees will be sent to the jurisdiction of other countries.
Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback released his own response against the plan, saying in a written statement that “we will pursue all actions available to fight the transfer of terrorists to USA soil”.
I urge President Obama to reconsider this reckless plan.
“For many years, it’s been clear that the detention center at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our security”, Obama said in a press briefing Tuesday morning.
Closing Guantanamo was one of Obama’s earliest campaign promises in 2008, but Congress has blocked his efforts.
Congress has an opportunity to close the detention facility in a way that maintains US national security, saves taxpayer money, eliminates a terrorist propaganda tool, and strengthens USA relations with allies, Cook said at a Pentagon news conference.
“These are people, some of them are the worst of the worst. It’s time to bring this chapter of American history to a close”. That gave President George W. Bush an array of commander-in-chief authority. “I think by anybody who’s paying attention, it’s hard to figure out exactly what Congress is doing”, he said. “It is illegal under current law to transfer a foreign terrorist to any facility in the United States, and I will continue to work to keep it that way”.
“I’ve repeatedly said I do not support the transfer of prisoners from the Guantanamo Bay military facility to Colorado”, Bennet said in a statement this morning.
