Police Arrest Two Suspects In Assault Case Against Marine Veteran
Over $20,000 has been raised on a GoFundMe page for a U.S. Marine brutally beaten outside of a McDonald’s in Washington, D.C.
“They’re charging the male with aggravated assault, the female with pick pocketing, but didn’t say anything about a hate crime so far”, Marquez said, explaining that he believes he was targeted exclusively because he’s white.
According to Marquez, he was eating at the restaurant on February 12 when a group of teens began taunting him for no reason. “And we all know if this was the other way around, it would be considered a hate crime automatically”. Marquez ignored them, which prompted calls and shouts that he was a racist. A third suspect has not yet been arrested. “The kids were asking me if I think that black lives mattered”, Marquez told the Marine Corps Times. It just seemed like they just wanted confrontation and I wasn’t going to play along with that.
“I am glad two suspects have been arrested, but I am deeply disappointed they have not been charged with a hate crime yet”.
Marquez, 30, is a Bronze Star with “V” device recipient who fought in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004 and served until 2011.
“It was a hate crime”, said Marquez, who was treated for head trauma at George Washington University Hospital. The investigation is ongoing. Suspect two then proceeded to take a wallet that carried a student identification card, credit cards and cash from the victim’s pocket.
