Dick Van Dyke steps in time to reprise Mary Poppins role
These days, you can’t go anywhere without hearing about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash Broadway musical Hamilton.
According to Variety, Lin-Manuel Miranda is Disney’s choice to play the role of Jack, a lamplighter, who sounds to be very similar to the role of Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke in the original Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt is presently in talks for the role of Mary Poppins.
The next “Mary Poppins” film will take place in Depression-era London about 20 years after the events of the first movie. This is interesting because this is the location where the books were originally written, and even more so because it’s looking to take storylines from P.L. Travers’ books about her continued adventures with the Banks family.
The Mary Poppins sequel might not be something that anyone particularly asked for, but it’s hard to argue with the casting for the project thus far.
Dick Van Dyke, the original Bert from the iconic film joins a veritable army of sweeps for Step In Time. “Into the Woods” helmer Rob Marshall will direct the movie with John DeLuca and Marc Platt producing. He also wrote the script and songs for “Hamilton” and will likely contribute his songwriting talents to the “Mary Poppins” sequel.
Miranda has been busy building a relationship with Disney, having composed original music for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and the studio’s animated movie “Moana”.
