Clinton, Sanders pitch to minority voters in SC town hall
Clyburn, a former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and the third-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, endorsed Clinton on February 19. She started the trend toward looking to do something about health care.
“In the wake of things like Ferguson and Black Lives Matter, and the recent backlash against Beyoncé for her “Formation” video, there have been a lot of racial tensions recently, in our nation”, said audience member Kyla Gray, a student at Columbia College.
“We have very specific ideas about how the federal government-you know, local police departments are run by municipalities-federal government can play a major role in ending the militarization of so many of our local police departments”, he said. Just say no! You’re running for president of the United States!
“No, no, no”, he said when asked by reporters whether he is writing off the state. But Bernie Sanders’s candidacy has complicated her efforts to clinch the nomination early on. Despite being an independent with tenuous ties to the Democratic Party, Reid agreed to throw the party’s weight behind Sanders when he won his first Senate race in 2006.
But Sanders does not have much support from the all important voting block of African Americans who will likely cast more than 50% of the ballots on Saturday.
At another point, however, Sanders stopped short of calling Trump racist.
Clinton, who appeared on stage after Sanders, sidestepped questions about the senator’s call for her to release her speeches. Sanders didn’t say how the schools would be affected by his plan, but pledged that his administration would “not only sustain, we will substantially increase funding” for the historically black schools.
Clinton will also hold a “Breaking Down Borders” rally with mothers who lost children to gun violence in Sumter. Those smaller donations could fund Sanders’s presidential ambitions all the way to Democratic convention.
Sanders lost black voters in Nevada, 76- 22 percent, according to entrance polls.
Reid would not criticize Sanders. Reid sought to maintain his neutrality through his home state’s nominating contest, given the prominent role it has played in the overall process.
Tuesday night’s event was sponsored by CNN and hosted by New Day host Chris Cuomo, and took place just as Nevada Republicans caucused to choose their nominee.
The issue of Clinton’s paid speeches to financial institutions was once again brought up.
