Cliven Bundy And Sons Indicted But Battle Against The BLM Rages On
Other than Cliven Bundy, all those charged in the Nevada standoff Wednesday also face charges in the OR standoff.
“The rule of law has been reaffirmed with these charges”, wrote U.S. Attorney for Nevada Daniel Bogden.
In addition to conspiring among themselves to plan and execute these crimes, the defendants recruited, organized, and led hundreds of other followers in using armed force against law enforcement officers in order to thwart the seizure and removal of Cliven Bundy’s cattle from federal public lands.
The indictment stems from what federal officials have described as the “massive armed assault” by Cliven Bundy and his co-defendants against federal law enforcement officers who tried to corral about 400 cattle near the Bundy Ranch. Though the real message is that you can participate in violent acts as long as you are a white redneck who has lots of guns, and as long as you don’t venture out alone and try to do it AGAIN. “The nation’s public lands belong to all Americans”. He said he and his followers were demonstrating against the return to prison of Harney County ranchers Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son, Steve Hammond, and the federal government’s control of public land.
Federal authorities said Bundy was the “leader, organizer and chief beneficiary of the conspiracy, and possessed ultimate authority over the conspiratorial operations and received the economic benefits of the extortion”. In the standoff Bundy’s armed supporters allegedly went so far as to take up sniper positions overlooking the agents.
Ammon Bundy’s lawyer, Mike Arnold, told The Oregonian Wednesday evening he had anticipated the indictments but declined comment on the specific charges, saying he hadn’t yet read them.
If convicted of the charges in the indictment, Bundy and the other four men could be forced to forfeit any property they gained as a result of the alleged crimes – totaling at least $3 million, according to prosecutors – and any firearms or ammunition used during the 2014 standoff.
Cliven Bundy is accused of being part of a conspiracy to “commit an offense against the United States” and conspiracy to injure or impeded a federal officer, assault on a federal officer, threatening a federal officer, weapon use and possession, obstruction, extortion, and attempting to interfere with “commerce and interstate travel in aid or extortion”.
“It’s important for the public to remember that there is a constitutional presumption of innocence in America”, he said. Just don’t be surprised someday when the government finally gets around to putting you in jail.
Together, the five men are facing 16 felony charges for the 2014 OR standoff, the event which emboldened the Bundy’s to seize the wildlife refuge.
U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams filed a motion Thursday, requesting that the hearing be canceled, citing a federal indictment returned by grand jurors in Nevada this week.
