Republican caucus-goers in Nevada make their voices known
Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told reporters Tuesday night at the Community College of Southern Nevada, where Trump appeared at a caucus site, that the location was “out of ballots” and he’d heard efforts were being made to print more.
Mr Donald Trump stormed to victory in the Republican caucuses in Nevada, giving the billionaire businessman his third straight victory in the race for the White House.
Rubio, who is averaging third place behind Trump and Cruz in recent national polls, was looking for his first outright win in Nevada: His camp had spun a third-place finish in Iowa and a second-place in SC as signs of momentum.
Rubio, focused on future primaries, left Nevada after a Tuesday morning rally at a casino in Las Vegas and later addressed supporters in Minneapolis and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
“We weren’t expected to win this one, we weren’t expected to win too much at all – and now we’re winning the whole country”, Trump proclaimed amid cheers. And soon the country is going to start winning, winning, winning!
In a new poll just released by 12News parent company Tegna, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are in a dead heat among Texas voters.
To that end, Rubio was the dominant choice among those who said they valued government experience over being an outsider, and those for whom winning the general election is the top priority.
Rubio, already campaigning in MI as caucus results rolled in, was projecting confidence that he can consolidate the non-Trump voters who have been splintering among an assortment of Republican candidates, saying, “we have incredible room to grow”.
Reports of various irregularities and peculiarities at the Nevada caucuses, including possible double voting and caucus workers in Trump attire, surfaced throughout the evening.
The Florida senator edged Cruz, a Texas senator, for second place in Nevada, and it’s clear his time is at hand – if he’s to have one. Delegates are awarded proportionally in the 21 primaries and caucuses held over the next three weeks in 19 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
“Isn’t he the one who wanted to restrict the size of soda drinks?” asked Patricia Kowal, a 66-year-old Democrat from Lublin, Wis. “I think that’s intruding on people’s personal choices”.
Sam Scott, wearing a “Hillary for Prison 2016” T-shirt, said he was behind The Donald: “He is the only Republican candidate I see that really does have groundswell support”. “Trump ACTUALLY said this”.
The contest was the fourth for the Republican presidential candidates, with Mr Trump so far winning in New Hampshire and SC. Ohio Governor John Kasich and Ben Carson who finished poor in Nevada will come under pressure to quit the race now. Later Rubio told CBS, “Seventy percent of Republicans don’t want Donald Trump to be their nominee”.
“They keep forgetting that when people drop out, we’re going to get a lot of votes”, he said.
A poll of voters by CNN showed Trump had supporters across most demographic groups.
Trump’s rivals concede they are running out of time to stop him.
