Kalamazoo’s Centerpoint Church hosted a vigil Sunday night honoring the victims shot Saturday, allegedly by 45-year-old Jason Dalton.
The Michigan Uber driver charged with murdering six people switched vehicles after sideswiping a auto at the start of the shooting spree, authorities said on Tuesday, adding they hoped his phone would help establish a motive for the killings.
During a talk with investigators, Dalton waived his right against self-incrimination and confessed his role in the Saturday night shootings, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said.
Following the recent shooting of six people in Kalamazoo, Uber’s driver screening tests have come into question.
Police have yet to say where Dalton obtained the 9mm handgun he used in three shootings that spanned four hours.
-5:42 p.m.: The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is called to the scene of the first attack, an apartment complex on the eastern edge of Kalamazoo County where a woman had been shot multiple times. Four of them died.
“The guy was a family man that for all intents and purposes seemed to stick with his family”, said Gary Pardo Jr., whose parents live across the street from Dalton in Kalamazoo Township.
Meanwhile, California prosecutors filed charges that Uber’s background checks failed to weed out 25 drivers with criminal records, including convictions for murder, assault, sex offenses and child abuse.
Matyas described the killings as “random murders”. He was arraigned Monday and is being held without bond.

The store owner said he plans to turn over surveillance footage to authorities of Dalton’s final purchase.

The family also extended prayers to the two people hospitalized- a 14-year-old girl and a woman who were severely wounded in separate shootings- and thanked law enforcement for its swift actions.
“He would go a month without mowing his lawn but was very meticulous with his cars”, Pardo said, explaining that Dalton, at times, owned a Chevrolet Camaro and two Hummer SUVs. However, they declined to say where he bought the gun.
The six victims have been identified as Richard Smith, 53, Tyler Smith, 18, Mary Lou Nye, 62, Mary Jo Nye, 60, Barbara Hawthorne, 68, and Dorothy Brown, 74.
The Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo’s Bishop Paul J. Bradley said in a statement there will be a Mass Monday praying for those affected: “We are shocked and saddened by the horrific acts of violence in our beloved Kalamazoo last evening”.
