‘Deadpool’ is the slutty part of the superhero genre
It’s humor that you try not to think about when your grandmother is on the other side of the table, and humor that would probably get me fired if I quoted one of the jokes from the film in this column. Her dad handed her a soda and Red Vines.
The film starts off with a scene that we’ve all seen in the trailers.
“Deadpool” is a fun movie, especially after the credits roll.
I raised my eyebrows at the dad. It contains every action flick cliché – the slow-motion cars flipping, explosions left and right, unreal fight scenes and that one-handed superhero landing that’s gotta be hell on the knees – and it’s aware of that.
Deadpool was not only hilarious-and not your cheesy comic book humor either-but it had the drama elements I expect from a super-hero movie, too. Without the suave characteristics or political correctness seen in typical superhero films, “Deadpool” makes a clever mockery of its genre and Hollywood as a whole. The comics are violent and vulgar.
A lot of people and parents believe the movie shouldn’t have been rated R. However, myself and those who are fans of the character and follow him know that if the movie was made with a PG-13 rating, it wouldn’t have been almost as good. “It’s not appropriate for them, so go yourselves and enjoy”. The ideal complement for Reynolds in this movie was T.J. Miller as Weasel.
I shook my head and ordered popcorn, no butter, and peanut M&Ms instead of Junior Mints. Well, maybe 14-year-old boys need to have their narrow worldview shaken up from time to time.
I turned around and put my feet up on the railing in front of me. One benchmark for extra cash to kick in was a $150 million cume in North America – a number the movie eclipsed in its first four days.
There are plenty of deviations from the source material here, but Deadpool has never been all that attached to continuity (except insofar as it lets him make snarky jokes). (Of course, parents will still sometimes take their children to R-rated movies, but Deadpool isn’t doing Minions numbers with 5-year-olds.) It also hints at the significance of Deadpool’s success: There aren’t many precedents to suggest that this kind of hit is possible, and going forward, all R-rated mainstream movies will be eyeing Deadpool’s numbers, if not its strategy. We saw “Argo” and “The World’s End”.
Ladies and gentlemen there was a warning and it’s called an R rating.
With this movie, there was no gray area. The movie surprised me with how well written it was.
The screen rights for Marvel’s comic book characters can be complicated and tricky to unravel.
My kid wants a motorcycle. It’s that time of the week where you can unabashedly declare which ladies you’ve been hardcore crushing on. Sawyer, who is just a few months shy of 17, went to a later showing with our neighbor, Aaron.
Deadpool now sits at No. 6, and if – or when – it passes Passion of the Christ for the top spot, it will do so despite not fitting neatly into any of these three categories. Well, the Filmratings listing says it’s all about violence: “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition – Rated R for sequences of violence”. “Gambit” will be shown sometime in 2017 while “Wolverine 3” was on March 3, 2017.
