Kaepernick to return to 49ers, says GM
While at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke confirmed that quarterback Colin Kaepernick will stay will the team and be part of its roster once it’s finalized in April. “And we’re excited about him getting healthy and getting going”.
In the clearest indication yet that Hayne’s potential is still highly regarded in San Francisco, Baalke commented positively on Hayne’s first season in the National Football League, in which he played eight games before being demoted to the 49ers practice squad. Baalke disagreed with that, however.
“I don’t know what the narrative is, that ‘Is he on the team?”
The 49ers could control it all just by doing nothing and keeping Kaepernick on the roster April 1, and guaranteeing his $11.9 million base… but there’s a lot of time before April 1 and it’s fair for the 49ers to use it.
Well, there are several reason for that, including the obvious one that Kaepernick lost his starting job at midseason to halt his three-year reign at that magnanimous role. “I told them the same thing I told you: we’re getting ready to work with him on April 4, so we’re excited”.
This decision on whether or not the 49ers do in fact keep Kaepernick or a team gives up enough to acquire him, could have a huge impact on what the Rams are able to do at the quarterback position this offseason.
“Yeah, it takes a while”, he said.
Any team taking a chance on Kaepernick would be betting that he can turn into the same player he was before last season.
Kelly said the important thing for Kaepernick in the short term is to get healthy so that he can put forth his best effort in both getting the offense down and competing with Gabbert.
In any case, it’ll be interesting to see how the Kaepernick saga plays out.
“They want me to be a good leader for the guys coming in and lead them to our ultimate goal, which is winning the Super Bowl”, Dial said in an exclusive phone interview with this newspaper from his Alabama home. His new deal is worth up to $12 million, with $5 million guaranteed, NFL Media reported.
The former Parramatta Eel wants to improve on those numbers this season but hasn’t set himself specific targets.
But no matter how you add it up, the most sensible place for Kaepernick next season is San Francisco, whether he likes that or not. “It’s very exciting”, Dial said of his extension.
“Last time we talked to Colin, Colin was excited”, Baalke continued. “Frank Gore and him were working out in Miami together”. “All indications are that it’s healing very nicely, and look forward to having him full speed as soon as possible”.
In seven games a year ago, Hyde rushed for 470 yards and three touchdowns before a foot injury ended his season early.
Rounding out the offensive staff are: Mick Lombardi (offensive quality control), Ryan Day (quarterbacks), Tom Rathman (running backs), Bob Bicknell (wide receivers), Jeff Nixon (tight ends), Pat Flaherty (offensive line) and Eric Wolford (offensive line assistant).
