Police, neighbors search for answers in Sunnyside deadly shooting
Investigators will continue gathering evidence at the house, Crump said. Strayhand gathered clothes, medications and her mother’s walker, and they both walked down the street.
Crump said first responding officers traded their guns for fire hoses and helped firefighters battle a blaze investigators believe was set by the suspect.
“They kind of scary because they seem so calm over there, so I don’t know”, a neighbor told KNXV. It appears he killed himself, Crump said.
The names of the suspect and the victims were not immediately released.
It is too early in the investigation for the Arizona police to confirm with any certainty if the man identified as the victim’s brother was the killer.
According to Sgt. Jonathan Howard, officers responded to 911 calls about a woman shooting a gun near the apartment complex.
Alex Arthur Buckner killed his parents and two younger sisters Tuesday, then shot at officers who tried to rescue the victims, authorities said. The first officers on scene ran into the burning house because they felt they had to act quickly, Crump said.
“I started writing the correct way for her to show her how to do the letters”, explained Sammie Evans, who is a retired school teacher and also lives right across the street from the Buckner’s. The girl, who was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after the shooting, died shortly after. They would chat a bit before the girl went back to her house.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Police Chief Joseph Yahner went out to the scene to give public comments. “I would visit her at work every once in a while”.
“This is what heroes look like”, he said of police and firefighters.
“She was nice to everybody, she was selfless, she didn’t deserve this to happen to her”, said Kayla Schooler, who worked with Kaitlin. “Their professionalism, their heroism under the worst possible conditions has blown me away today as mayor of this city”.
