Joey Bosa believes he’s the top player in the National Football League draft
Bosa’s father, John, was the 17th overall pick of the Miami Dolphins in the 1987 NFL Draft. For example, Bosa ran into fellow defensive lineman Adolphus Washington, who played alongside him at Ohio State, and forgot he was going to be at the combine.
But what about the next generation?
“Got to marry a tall athletic girl and breed football players, I guess”, Bosa said.
Bosa, though, said he doesn’t think he has anything to prove at the combine. Tension isn’t part of the laid-back persona that was on display during an 11-minute session with the media. “But I think as a player if you don’t believe that then there’s kind of something wrong”.
Unless a team becomes infatuated with Florida State cornerback/safety Jalen Ramsey, Bosa will be the first defensive player off the board.
Mostly, though, he was at ease in front of the media and comfortable saying he believes he’s the best defensive player in the draft. “He’s one of coach (Larry) Johnson’s guys, so when I watch him I pretty much see the prototype coach Johnson, exactly what he coaches”. “The defense won that game, 100 percent, Von Miller”.
Noah Spence is the most talented pass rusher, yet also comes with red flags.
Bosa played nearly primarily as a left defensive end in Ohio State’s 4-3 base, but he also saw snaps on the right side, inside as a three technique and on his feet as a spying linebacker.
“I was asked to block a lot, so that’s what I tried to do, be a good team player”. He said that wasn’t part of any master plan.
“I never really see myself as a Joe”, Bosa said.
IN tackle Jason Spriggs – who is not yet known to have interviewed with Indianapolis – posted the day’s quickest 40-yard dash by a lineman with a time of 4.94. It’s tough when your metabolism is going like it is. He joked “I’m eating a ridiculous amount, I don’t know where the hell it’s going”.
“I lost a few pounds, but I don’t think it’s a problem if an National Football League team wants to put five, 10 pounds on me”, he said.
When he stepped onto the podium, Bosa greeted everyone with a casual “What’s up?” “People say I’m mostly a power guy”. “Maybe once I’m like maybe 50, I’ll be Joe”.
The long hair flowing out of the backward baseball cap fit with his easygoing vibe and good-natured humor.
“It’s who I am”, he said.
Regardless of prospect question marks, recent history proves even the most talented pass rushers rarely provide substantial contributions in year one. As a first time starter in 2013, he produced a respectable 7.5 sacks at Ohio State.
“I’ll discuss that with the teams”.
Bosa was ejected for targeting during the Buckeyes’ Fiesta Bowl win over Notre Dame. He was first-team All-America as a sophomore (55 tackles and 13.5 sacks) and second-team All-America this past season (51 tackles and five sacks). He waited his turn behind past stars like 2015 first-round pick Vic Beasley but said he made the most of his opportunity as a starter this year.
Bosa is a 269-pound outside linebacker candidate for 3-4 defensive schemes and defensive end in a 4-3 alignment, which he operated under for the Buckeyes as an All-American pass rusher.
