Romney hits Donald Trump over releasing taxes
Trump has said he would not release his taxes before March 1, when nearly a dozen states vote or caucus, because they are “massive”.
“When Mitt Romney asked me for my endorsement last time around, he was so awkward and goofy that we all should have known he could not win!” he added later. Lindsey Graham – came to Trump’s defense Thursday. “We’re going to select our nominee – we really ought to see from all three of these fellows what their taxes look like to see if there is an issue there”.
Romney was the GOP nominee in 2012.
Romney is also calling on Florida Sen.
Federal law prohibits the government from releasing an individual’s tax return, but most candidates do so voluntarily. Biting back at conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump asserted that “very few people listen to your radio show”.
Local Trump organizer Don Peay says Romney’s attack is a clear sign the GOP establishment is getting anxious about Donald’s tightening grip on the party’s presidential race. He said he could not guarantee that would happen before the general election in November because he doesn’t know how long it will take. But only one of them is running for president this year.
Trump told Cooper that returns were “extremely complex” (“Frankly”, he boasted, “I get audited every single year”), and that he was in no rush to air them. I mean he’s basically using Harry Reid’s dirty politics play book.
The irony of the moment struck one key member of Obama’s re-election campaign.
Romney tweeted during the debate that there’s no legitimate reason why Trump can’t release returns while under audit.
Romney released his 2010 tax returns and 2011 estimates in January of 2012, following the lead of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, then his main GOP rival in the 2012 presidential race.
Trump last summer released his personal financial disclosure shortly after announcing his presidential run and has consistently touted the fact that he released his financial numbers ahead of schedule. “He got some publicity today”. In 2011, Trump lost when he tried to sue an author for claiming Trump was only worth only a couple hundred million.
Mr. Reid said past year that “of course” Mr. Romney paid taxes but that he had “zero” apologies and “no repentance” “because it was an issue that was important”, saying the issue was about Mr. Romney releasing his tax returns.
