Adele wins big at the BRITS
The singer beat competition from the likes of Jess Glynne and Florence Welch in the best British female solo artist category after seeing huge success with her third album, 25. Adele took to the stage in tears, saying: “My kid is going to think I’m so cool”.
Soaring to the top of both regions with a blend of musical success and delightful charm, Adele recently stole the show at the 2016 Brit Awards in London, reported Reuters.
The ceremony at London’s O2 Arena and hosted by British comedy duo Ant & Dec, was broadcast live on ITV. She also won awards for Best Single for the hit song “Hello”, prestigious Best Album for “25”, and also won the Global Success Award.
Bad Gal Riri made her Brit Awards return, performing for the first time since 2012. Her award was announced via satellite by Tim Peake, with Adele telling him: “I hope you’re not too hungry!”
In another emotional moment, Bowie’s friend and British actor Gary Oldman and Scottish singer Annie Lennox paid a heartfelt tribute to Bowie, the British rock legend who died unexpectedly from cancer last month, aged 69.
Adele used the opportunity to declare support for American singer Kesha who is now involved in a legal battle with Sony Music and a producer she has accused of sexual assault. Oldman described Bowie as a mortal with superhuman potential. Rumours of an all-star tribute act proved wide of the mark, with Bowie’s old band instead taking to the stage to perform Life on Mars with Lorde, an artist he had championed. Meanwhile Justin Bieber, who performed with best British solo artist James Bay, was named best worldwide solo artist.
Coldplay, who opened the show with Hymn For The Weekend and won the award for British group, are at number five.
Lead singer Chris Martin dedicated the award to “all the young men and women musicians in refugee camps around the world. They could be us and we could be them, so we send them our love”.
“To come back after so long away and be so warmly received is really lovely – thank you so much”, said Adele, dressed in a floor-length red gown, as she picked up her first award of the night for best British female.
Bay was back onstage as he was presented with best British male artist by Kylie Minogue which he said was “insane”.
