It Seems Crazy That Christie Endorsed Trump. But Actually, It Makes Sense
Paul LePage endorsed Donald Trump for president Friday, lending the GOP front-runner the backing of another northeastern governor on the same day Chris Christie offered his support.
Christie said the Republican Party needs to elect the candidate most capable of defeating Hillary Clinton, the favorite for the Democratic nomination, adding that “the one person who Bill and Hillary Clinton do not want to see on that stage come next September is Donald Trump”.
Riding a populist wave that has often veered toward racism and demagoguery, the real estate mogul has won three of the first four statewide nominating contests before next week’s “Super Tuesday”, when 11 more states vote.
Making his announcement on Friday, Christie singled out Trump as the strongest candidate in the Republican race.
Many Trump supporters said they hadn’t seen the Houston debate that shook him up. “But I don’t believe that his endorsement of Donald Trump says much of anything about why I chose to endorse [Christie]”.
In one testy moment, Rubio speculated that if Trump “hadn’t inherited $200 million, you know where Donald Trump would be right now?”
“Lightweight Marco Rubio was working hard last night”. But Christie wasn’t always so gung ho about the Trump team.
“[The Clintons] know how to run the standard political playbook against junior senators and run them around the block”, said Mr Christie.
“Since I started this whole thing I’ve been practically Number 1”, Trump said at a rally in Texas.
Christie’s support marked a reversal from his previous comments on Trump: “I just don’t think he’s suited to be president of the United States”, Christie told Fox News in August.
Trump and Christie then took turns sticking it to Marco Rubio, who rattled Trump in a CNN debate Thursday night.
On Saturday, Democrats will head to the polls in SC to choose between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and current Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Baker said he’s not persuaded that Trump will lock up the nomination after the Super Tuesday contests. “I think it’s sad for the voters because you don’t get a debate on policy…it’s all mudslinging and, quite honestly, I think it looks like a circus for the Republican party”.
Back in December, Trump called for a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslims entering the USA until “our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”.
