Cancellation of Meetings With Punjab, Haryana Chief Ministers Unfortunate

The Pakistan high commissioner is scheduled to visit Chandigarh during July 29-August 1. While an initial assessment by the Ministry said talks between the National Security Advisers of India and Pakistan would be held in August as scheduled, the government could face strong pressure from the Opposition to call off the dialogue process set in motion by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif after a meeting in Russian Federation, if more evidence of a Pakistan-link is unearthed.

Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit cancelled a visit to Chandigarh on Tuesday after the chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana conveyed their refusal to meet him following the terror attack in Gurdaspur. Basit, thereafter, postponed his visit to the city. “But the chief minister called off the meeting in view of incident at Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district”.

According to security sources of India, the assailants were suspected to belong to either Lashkar-e-Taiba or Jaish-e-Mohammad.
