Bautista Seeking $150M From Blue Jays
This is not new, and with Bautista more financially motivated to perform than he has been in his entire career, the Blue Jays can maximize the final year of this contract and enter offseason negotiations with a clearer understanding of his league-wide market.
On Tuesday night, TSN reported the dollar amount Bautista is apparently seeking: $150 million, over five years. The stakes are high for us as a team and for him as a free agent.
Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins also refused to go into detail or discuss any progress made on a new deal that would start with the 2017 season.
“I promise you with Josh hitting behind me I’ll get some better pitches to hit”, Pillar said. If you run a business, or a team, you know that capital diverted to Mr. Bautista in his golden years means less to invest in emerging stars of income and opportunity.
“I want to be that guy”. Team president Mark Shapiro has the unenviable job of trying to please his Rogers owners by watching the pennies while also trying to please the millions of fans across Canada by ensuring the on-field product is as exciting as it was last season.
According to reports, Toronto was set to ship Saunders to the Los Angeles Angels with Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce coming to the Blue Jays. In total, he gave them an estimated $195.7 million worth of baseball over those five seasons. “If someone plopped a player and it just worked for us and we said, ‘Wow, that would be a good guy for us that fits that description.’ But I think I’d be more apt to tackle that one going into next year at this same time”.
Over the past couple of weeks he has met with Blue Jays management about a contract extension, and he isn’t bothering to negotiate.
“I’ve said that over and over; I would love for Jose to be here”, said Atkins. “I don’t think there should be any negotiation”. However, Cabrera has hit.334/.417/.579 the past five seasons with just 12 fewer homers and 108 more RBIs that Bautista since 2011. Living in the hopeful present, mere months after Mr.Bautista had yet another year for the ages, we may be reluctant to foresee his inevitable decline and fall. He has a number, he told the Blue Jays that number, and isn’t going to move from it. “We have them constantly”. It seems like peculiar timing for the Blue Jays to be involved in a rumor involving the acquisition of another right fielder. “Baseball has a great way of measuring each player’s value and it’s about how much of that are they willing to share with the player”.
However, there is no reason to believe Bautista is headed for a down year.
The 32-year-old, a four-time All-Star, was arrested in Hawaii at a Maui resort on October 31 following an argument with his wife and pleaded not guilty to a charge of abuse of a family or household member.
