South Carolina deputy shot, wounded; suspect found dead
A citizen later assisted the deputy and alerted authorities that Gist had been shot multiple times, according to the statement.
Dr. Rhodes said she was told Gist’s bullet proof vest did take some gun fire, which may have saved her life. Gist, who is black, worked as a correctional officer for a couple of years and had been a patrol officer for about a year.
They located the vehicle registered to the suspect but the suspect has not been found. At this time, officials did not say if the suspect’s vehicle had been located in Goose Creek or North Charleston.
Lewis said law enforcement officers rely on their training and said he believes Gist survived the shooting because she relied on her training. She is now being treated at a nearby hospital.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, North Charleston Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are all assisting in the investigation. The man barricaded himself in a house where three people were asleep but the three managed to get out safety. Kimber Gist, was shot twice below the protective body armor she was wearing, Berry said.
Spencer Pryor with the North Charleston Police Department says the suspect entered the home on Bexley Street where three people were sleeping.
Surgeons in Cleveland say they have performed the nation’s first uterus transplant, a new frontier that aims to give women who lack wombs a chance at pregnancy.
Lewis did not identify the person who was with Smith prior to the gunfire, but said that person was being treated as a witness. Chief Deputy Mike Cochran said she is in serious but stable condition after surgery. “I’m thankful for that”.
We contacted Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler’s office, to ask if the Supervisor would be willing to consider adding additional deputies. “When something like this happens, it affects us all”.
“I think we are seeing a trend in society that folks are becoming more violent with law enforcement”, Lewis said.
