Chris Davis Drives in Five as Baltimore Beats Atlanta
The O’s answered with three in the bottom of the first, on the first of Davis’ two homers, a three-run shot off Julio Teheran (6-6, 4.71 ERA). Baltimore extended its winning streak to four games and moved one game above. “My job is to go out there and play as hard as I can for this team, whether it’s at first, in right, (as a DH), whatever it may be, and that’s been my focus all year”.
“I don’t know if it’s mental, but the numbers sure show it”, manager Fredi Gonzalez said. He’s changed course completely over his last five starts, however, going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, walking six, striking out 28 and allowing no home runs. The right-hander labored through a 92-pitch, four-inning night and fell to 1-5 on the road. Jimenez (8-6) retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced to end a run of three successive defeats.
Atlanta had eight hits to Baltimore’s nine, but only scored three times in the game.
“Obviously I have been a bit slower on the road”, he acknowledged.
The Braves then loaded the bases before Chris Johnson hit a routine fly to center. “It was way too open and the next inning I was able to get it better”.
Chris Davis is heating up at the plate, and that could give the Baltimore Orioles a big lift in the season’s final two months. He hit 53 homers two years ago but hasn’t quite returned to that level since, and if he can light it up in the second half, it will help the Orioles.
Teheran settled down after that but lasted only four innings.
The Orioles made it 6-2 on Joseph’s two-out RBI single in the fifth off left-hander Ross Detwiler. One inning later, Jones doubled in an unearned run to chase Detwiler.
Foltynewicz tossed one scoreless inning out of the bullpen at Colorado on July 11 in his most recent appearance.
Atlanta has lost 12 of 16 to fall a season-high eight games under.500.
After Jimenez departed, Jace Peterson hit an RBI single in the Atlanta eighth.
Orioles: Manny Machado, Travis Snider and Ryan Flaherty entered the game a collective 0 for 42.
With scheduled starter Manny Banuelos heading to the disabled list Tuesday, Mike Foltynewicz (3-2, 5.27) will be promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett to start for Atlanta. He was slated to start Wednesday.
“Tilly was the reason we stayed in the ball game, ” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. David Carpenter, who replaced Banuelos on Tuesday, will be designated for assignment.
After he won 29 games the last two seasons, the Baltimore Orioles were expecting more of the same from Chris Tillman in 2015.
