CDC: Zika Virus Confirmed in 9 Pregnant Woman in US
But access to preventive health care in the state, with its high rate of uninsured people, can prove challenging for the state’s poorest residents, many of whom are at greater risk for contracting a mosquito-borne virus like Zika, experts say. CDC researchers in Brazil and Puerto Rico are trying to determine whether the virus can cause microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with abnormally small heads, and a rare paralyzing condition, Guillain-Barre, which can be fatal.
Earlier, America’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommended pregnant women consider not going to the 2016 summer Olympics in Brazil.
A number of airlines have raised concerns that the rapidly spreading Zika virus may be discouraging travel in the Americas, the International Air Transport Association’s Director General and CEO Tony Tyler told reporters in New York Thursday.
So far, there have been 107 reported cases of Zika virus in the United States, and 40 cases acquired locally.
Only one out of every five people infected with Zika show any symptoms, and even those who fall ill usually do not suffer severe symptoms.
There is now no cure or vaccine for Zika and no way to prevent it other than avoiding mosquito bites.
“We feel like it’s only a matter of time” before someone tests positive for the virus at Legacy, said Katy Caldwell, the community clinic’s chief executive.
“It’s important to note that 10-20 percent of all pregnancies end in a spontaneous miscarriage, so the fact that [Zika is] present doesn’t necessarily mean that it caused them”.
Tom Frieden said Puerto Rico is clearly the most affected area, with the potential for hundreds of thousands of cases of the virus. “When we publish (traffic) numbers, particularly I think the regional numbers for January, perhaps there will be the first indication of that”.
Last week, health officials revealed Iowa’s first case, a woman between the ages of 61 and 80 who recently had traveled to Central America. This is in line with existing recommendations for pregnant women to postpone travel to areas where the virus is being transmitted. The other woman is still pregnant. Laboratory tests confirmed infections in another 1,612, and 6,630 were listed as suspected Zika infections.

The two cases confirmed in the U.S. were found in “women whose only known risk factor was sexual contact with a symptomatic male partner with recent travel to an area with ongoing Zika virus transmission”, a CDC statement read.
“We know that, at least while men are symptomatic, they can spread Zika to their sexual partners”, Frieden said.
