Authorities: Agency didn’t want slaying suspect detained
Officers contacted the U.S. Customs and Border Protection about Razo, but no detainer was issued and he was released because no crime had been committed, Dunlap said.
(Painesville) – Bond has been set at $10,000,000 for thirty-five year old Juan Razo who pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of a woman Monday as she walked along the Greenway Trail with her two children in the Lake Metroparks. Razo, who resides in the city of Painesville, shook his head no to all but the birth certificate.
Minutes later, a Concord Township resident called the sheriff’s office to report that a man — later identified as Razo – was standing in his backyard with a rifle.
A judge in court Tuesday expressed frustration that Razo did not have identification at his hearing and that he was in the U.S. without permission.
The Border Patrol said Razo was in the country illegally, but advised deputies to release him because he had no criminal record in the United States, according to WKYC. A frustrated Judge Michael Cicconetti shouted, “How in the hell do I even know it’s him?” according to WKYC.
The manhunt for Razo began late Monday morning after a 14-year-old girl told police he had tried to rape her in another section of the park.
“He’s here illegally and we can’t confirm his identity”, Cicconetti said.
She told Cicconetti that she and her client are not contesting any high bond amount set.
Local authorities had the ideal opportunity to detain him-but were told to stand down by border patrol, said Lake County Sheriff Daniel Dunlap. He was being held in the Lake County Jail.
A scary day in Lake County, as a woman was shot in the arm on a popular walking trail…just hours before police discovered a murder scene, just a few hundred yards away.
Just before 5 p.m. Monday, WKYC’s crew watched as Painesville police officers – with guns drawn – were headed into the Metroparks at the intersection of SR 84 and Liberty Street.
“This is a bail hearing and I need to know some facts about this case”, he said.
