Donald Trump has big lead in Alabama, new poll says
Christie’s bombshell on Friday, which may well change the dynamics of the Republican race came a day after Trump’s two main rivals – Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz – ganged up against him in a CNN debate that turned into a virtual brawl.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Friday endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, a surprising move that threatened to eclipse lauded debating performance on Thursday night by Republican party establishment favorite Senate Marco Rubio.
“When voters have a clear choice between two people, that’s when Donald Trump starts to lose, so the sooner that happens, the better off we’re going to be as a party”, he said.
Though Christie is the first governor to endorse Donald Trump, his last big endorsement was for cookie dough ice cream.
Ray Washburne, who was Christie’s national finance chairman for his presidential campaign and is now unaligned, led the call.
Still, Christie hadn’t been shy in criticizing Trump when he was in the race.
As the leading Republican candidate, he has won three straight contests in New Hampshire, South Caroline and Nevada.
Rubio went on the attack at Thursday’s debate, calling out Trump for repeating himself.
Trump took the time to respond to Rubio as well, referring to him as a “nasty guy” with a “fresh mouth” before proceeding to make fun of the size of Rubio’s ears. But the endorsement’s true importance is that it blunts Rubio’s momentum and puts the spotlight back on Trump, who is winning in nearly every Super Tuesday state and just needs to run out the clock.
Mr Rubio said he saw Mr Trump applying makeup backstage, as well, because he had a “sweat moustache” he needed to cover up. He’s never faced any struggle.
The Daily News has skewered Trump repeatedly over the course of his campaign.
Meanwhile, the New York Post – whose editorial board is more sympathetic to Trump’s conservative positions than the Daily News – trumpeted Christie’s endorsement Saturday with a front page that said “YUUUGE!”
“I don’t think he’s of presidential caliber”. “And I’m looking and I’m getting ready because, you know, it’s like a lot of people, I’m a pretty strong guy”.
