How Do You Celebrate A Leap Year Birthday?
For Mildred Wilson, 92, of Greensboro, celebrating her granddaughter’s leap year birthday is a heartfelt celebration.
“I would come home crying to my parents, and they would take care of those tears by saying, ‘Yes, you do have a birthday.’ They really made my birthday special”, she said.
As for the birthday boy, the calendar doesn’t seem to be a big deal.
Amelia only had to think for a moment when asked how many candles she plans to have on her birthday cake.
“If a leap year falls on a century, a year ending in double zeroes, you only add a leap day if it’s divisible by 400”, he says. “Then you could have two”.
For her 64th, (or 16th birthday) her friends from Swartz Creek, from where she graduated, arranged a party for her at a restaurant.
“The only thing I notice is that, when people are doing data entry, when I tell them my birthday, there’s a 50 percent chance that they’ll smile”, she said. He says inconveniences caused by corporate or technological failure to recognize the day has resulted in serious problems for decades for leapers, as he calls those who share his birthday. “Not everyone has a day everyone knows about”.
Like many leapers, Young celebrates her birthday February 28 on the “off” years.
“My papa’s birthday is the next day [March 2], so sometimes we celebrate together”, she said. Eric on the other hand says that sharing such an unusual birthday each February 29 with his dad Fred is “pretty incredible”, but does say that having that birthday does offer up some challenges.
This year, many companies are going out of their way to help with the celebration. Karin Henriksen gave birth to her daughter Heidi on Feb 29 in 1960, and her sons Olav and Leif-Martin on the same day in 1964 and 1968 respectively.
“It’s cool”, Elise said. We call this a “solar” or “tropical” year.
The society had its origins in 1988 when American woman Raenell Dawn started a leap year birthday club with her cousin. And the Lyons Township High School sophomore also thinks it’s special.
A phone operator at a Green Bay hospital, Pangrazzi even sounds young, and people who don’t even know she’s a Leap Year baby assume she’s lots younger than she is. “She said in between, there was my birthday”, Walls said.
By my second leap year birthday, when I was 8, it was much easier to wrap my head around.
“When I turned 21, I wanted to celebrate it on the 28th, but that didn’t fly”.
Alonzo and husband Albert have two grandchildren whose birthdays she couldn’t match – Alec and Ashlin Alonzo, of Channahon”, – so, this year, “the last I can catch on that are my two grandsons. Normally, they celebrate it every February 28 because her 21-year-old brother was born on the 27.
“I’ve got over 25 cousins coming, we’re going to play soccer and go to the pool”, Myles said on Saturday.

– In Finland, tradition dictates that if a man refuses a woman’s proposal on leap day, he should buy her the fabrics for a skirt.
Contrary to what many believe, leap years do not occur every four years. And having had it happen once before in the 20 years that I’ve belonged to the chorus, it’s awesome to have 200 people sing just to you. The year 1900 wasn’t a leap year, and the years 2100, 2200, and 2300 won’t be leap years.
