The new supermarket where everything is incredibly cheap
A supermarket called WeFood opened Monday in Copenhagen, and the store will be selling only food that’s past its sell-by date – a date that doesn’t indicate food safety but rather food quality, according to Consumer Reports.
A Danish supermarket is flogging expired foods at a heavy discount, in an attempt to reduce waste. “Excited customers flocked to ‘Wefood”, who are selling a variety of products, that would otherwise end up in the bin, at reduced rates.
While so much of the globe still struggles with starvation and malnutrition, food waste remains a main point of contention for many when considering the massive food industries in developed countries. The store, called Wefood, offers 30 to 50 % discounts for all of its products.
He added: ‘Many people see this as a positive and politically correct way to approach the issue, ‘ The Independent reported.
The store is also collaborating with importers of citrus fruits, butchers, and producer of organic fruit and nut bars.
Just after the law on ban of throwing away unsold food by supermarkets in France was passed this month, the authorities are now contemplating on implementing the ban EU-wide.

Danish Minister for Food and the Environment Eva Kjer Hansen was quoted by the publication as saying: “It’s ridiculous that food is just thrown out or goes to waste”.
“People in the community said, “‘Here’s a millionaire from a different community coming into a community of color and telling them he’s going to set up shop and sell them other people’s garbage, basically, ‘” Ernest Duke Bennett, a neighborhood activist, told TakePart previous year.
Last year, British retailer Marks & Spencer pledged to donate food that is to expire soon to people in need, with an aim to reduce its own food waste by 20 percent by 2020.
In Denmark, if WeFood’s popularity continues and it’s able to maintain its food deliveries, Søndergaard said the store plans to open branches across the country.
