Projection: Hillary Clinton Wins SC Primary
There were few bright spots for Vermont Sen.
Initial exit polls show that Clinton won 84 percent of Black voters in sc, carrying 86 percent of Black women.
Sanders congratulated Clinton in a statement, but cast an eye toward the bigger contest in just three days. “It’s their Saturday; they could be doing whatever they want”, said Mohan of an event in Ballard.
But Birgitta Johnson, an assistant professor at the University of SC, said she believed Clinton will “say anything to get votes”, while Sanders “deals with structural issues rather than talking points” on education and other issues important to her. Clinton had 502 delegates to 70 for Sanders in advance of the primary. Among older black voters, she secured 96 per cent.
“Let’s break down the barriers that keep people on the sidelines of our economy, especially women”, Clinton said.
While we were stuck at a ceremonial room at Atlanta City Hall on Friday waiting for Hillary Clinton to speak, the Democrat spoke to an overflow crowd of at least 500 in the building’s rotunda.
Two-thirds of white voters under 45 supported Sanders, but among blacks, that group went overwhelmingly for Clinton. She grabbed 70% of the vote or more from liberals, moderates, and conservatives.
Anecdotal accounts suggest voter turnout was strong in Greenville County – one downtown precinct reported 31 percent voter turnout at 2 p.m. – but lower throughout the state. Among independents, a slim majority backed Sanders. Clinton took 87 percent of their votes, compared to Sanders, who won only 13 percent. For example, while 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney received the support of 59 percent of whites, Obama was backed by 93 percent of blacks, according to network exit polls.
Sanders was gaining momentum when he beat out Clinton in New Hampshire earlier this month by a huge number, but his luck apparently couldn’t last. While Sanders spent the end of the week outside of SC, his campaign did invest heavily in the state.
“Tomorrow, this campaign goes national”.
According to The Telegraph, polls indicated that Clinton is in the front in eight of the Super Tuesday states, while Sanders leads in MA and his home state of Vermont. “Instead, they have channeled their sorrow into a strategy and their mourning into a movement”, Clinton said.
In her victory speech, Clinton aimed a dig at the man tipped to be the Republican presidential candidate. He did not mention his poor showing in SC.
The victory marks an impressive moment of redemption for Clinton who in 2008 lost badly in the state to Barack Obama – his win here serving as a turning point for his ultimately victorious campaign.
