Oscars 2016: the memes from the red carpet
It’s been quite a year for the 27-year-old.
The release of “The Danish Girl” capped a year when transgender issues went mainstream, fueled by the success of award-winning TV series like “Transparent” and the transition of Caitlyn Jenner, the former U.S. Olympic athlete. “She challenged me to step up my game continuously”, the actor said.
Actress Alicia Vikander accepts the award for Best Supporting Actress in The Danish Girl at the 88th Oscars on February 28, 2016 in Hollywood, California. “Thank you for giving me the belief anything can happen”.
Vikander closed with, “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my dream team, which is Teresa, Charles, Laura, I want to thank my friends and my mom and dad”.
Vikander also left behind fellow contenders: Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), and Rooney Mara (Carol). “My director”, she continued.
As Wegener, Vikander gave a compassionate performance as Gerda, who struggles to come to terms with her husband’s decision to become a woman but eventually ends up being his biggest moral support.

ET recently spoke to Fassbender, who is also nominated for an Oscar – in the Best Actor category for his role in Steve Jobs – about Vikander’s success.
“Back home I didn’t even know you could do films in English as a foreign language actress and if I could just continue to work that would be great”. Now she has a statue of her own.
