Priyanka Chopra gives away Oscar to ‘Mad Max: Fury Road
The winners will be announced at Sunday’s 88th annual Oscar award ceremony.
“I would have to say that it was the biggest project that I’ve ever worked on”, he said. But this year is going to be different. This nearly exactly echoes a statement that the new Max, Tom Hardy, made about his director in May of previous year. As of this writing, “The Big Short”, surprisingly, has the most juice. Sometimes Academy voters end up splitting their decision and award a particular film the Best Picture award without recognizing its director, but about three-fourths of the time, the prizes match.
“Spotlight” was the early frontrunner, and still has a valid claim in this category.
Which film will win the most awards?
The Oscar red-carpet walk might be daunting, but it’s nothing like the seemingly never-ending, 15-year journey of regular disappointment and desert hardship Miller and his team endured trying to make Mad Max: Fury Road. Mad Max created “action-art” whilst The Martian got Ridley Scott on track (f***ing miracle considering his last few outings) and Matt Damon in prime acting form. “Spotlight” took home the first award of the night.
But it is British comedian and TV host Stephen Fry whom she is most grateful to for raising her profile – so she said, with her tongue firmly in cheek, of course. “We were too busy being raped and lynched to worry about best cinematography”. This year there are arguments in favor of nominations for Jordan (“Creed”), Will Smith (“Concussion”) and “Straight Outta Compton” (perhaps a best-picture nod). It is absurd that every year tear-jerking, independent pieces win all the awards. He’s superb but is unlikely to win, and Mark Ruffalo doesn’t deserve to in my opinion as he’s not at his very best in Spotlight.
Will Win: Brie Larson. The Golden Globe went to Larson and Blanchett won an Oscar as recently as 2014. “She’s one of the most exciting up and comers out there at the moment and Room really displays her incredible talent”.
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years – 10%.
Triumph for Hollywood darling Stallone, who gets standing ovations at most industry gatherings, is seen as the potential feel-good story of the night, four decades after his first nomination for playing the same role – boxer Rocky Balboa. Performances, films and crafts are honored, much of the time, because sentimentality obscures objectivity.
However, Hussey likes Mark Rylance, who portrays a Soviet spy in Steven Spielberg’s period drama “Bridge of Spies” that also stars Tom Hanks as an American negotiator. Stallone was nominated for an Oscar award for best supporting actor for his role in the film. Only one of his adversaries – Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs – has been tipped by certain circles of journalists. Leigh gets raw and ugly in the role, throwing vanity to the winds and unleashing a villain for the ages. Less likely: Rooney Mara in Carol as Therese Belivet.
With Winslet’s Golden Globe and BAFTA, I think she’ll take one home for the Brits. Rachel McAdams was great in “Spotlight”, but the performances in that movie all functioned as part of an excellent ensemble, and I’d be surprised if any individual turns were singled out.
Vice President Joe Biden, who introduced best-song nominee Lady Gaga, was met by a standing ovation before talking about sexual assault on college campuses.
