No More PlayStation TV in Japan
Effectively, this means that if you’re in Japan, and looking for the novelty TV box, you’re out of luck.
It’s been a long, uneventful journey into obscurity for the PlayStation TV hardware, with Sony Japan announcing the discontinuation of the product in Japan. Sony, the PlayStation’s official manufacturer, says that their shipments have reached completion. The death knell has finally sounded for PlayStation TV as Sony this weekend pulled the micro-console from the Japanese PlayStation Store.
It’s unclear at this point in time if Sony is going to discontinue this product, known as PlayStation TV in the west, in other markets as well. In comparison to the other media hubs, the PS TV is not only more expensive – even with a heavily reduced $40 price tag – but is also less suitable for the job. The device was initially available for $99, but now it can be bought under $50 from Amazon.
It remains to be seen when the manufacturer decides to cut short the adventure of PS TV in Europe and North America. For all of its potential, in bringing the niche Vita library to more gamers, and in streaming PS4 titles, the PlayStation TV fundamentally failed in its endeavors.
Although the PlayStation Vita continues to live on, its days also seem numbered. Do you think the company has taken the right decision or will it regret later?
