Leicester had their lead at the top of the table cut to two points following Sunday’s last-gasp defeat to Arsenal, with third-placed Tottenham the same distance behind after beating Manchester City.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed that Welbeck’s team-mates had chanted his name as he returned to the changing room after the match.
As time went on, Leicester City started getting back into the game, with Jamie Vardy earning a penalty towards the end of the first half after a foul by Nacho Monreal.
Danny Welbeck was the unlikely hero for Arsenal, rising in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time to head home Mesut Ozil’s free kick and complete a stunning comeback for Arsenal.
“We’re the type of team to fight for each other, have each other’s backs and do what’s necessary to try to help each other out”.
We came out of a bad spell after four games without a win – we now win two games on the bounce.
“To come to a place like this and to battle away and having a chance to come away with three points shows how far we’ve come as a team and as a squad”.
Mertesacker also praised Welbeck for proving doubters wrong as he hit one of Arsenal’s most crucial goals of the season to date.
In those closing seconds, with the Emirates awash with tension and anxiety, it looked like Leicester would secure a point that would feel like a victory to manager Claudio Ranieri and his players.
“It’s the same as if you won the match”, he said.
But the sending off of Danny Simpson early in the second half for a second yellow card gave Arsenal hope and they equalised through Theo Walcott on 70 minutes to set up the big finale.
“After that bad spell, still being in with a chance is a good result. Go home and we will see you next Monday.’ They deserve it. They made a fantastic performance today”. Ranieri added “I was happy if, between City and Arsenal, we got two points, and we got three. We lost to our opponents – we must say well done”.
“We tried to counter-attack, have a fast transition and we controlled the match very well”. We kept missing chances but kept composure and kept coming. We need all our players. “We overturned eight points to two – it is a significant difference”.
