Sharks acquire Reimer in trade with Maple Leafs
The Leafs announced that Reimer and Jeremy Morin were trade to San Jose for a conditional fourth round pick, Ben Smith and backup goalie Alex Stalock.
He left the game Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens in the first period with an upper-body injury but said afterwards it was soreness from spasms in his neck he began feeling Friday morning in the gym and that the injury was not serious, so it shouldn’t impact any plans the Maple Leafs have of trading him.
“We like where our team is at”, Wilson said.
This should be the last move we’ll see from the Sharks. He has 98 goals and 196 assists over nine season with Edmonton, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Los Angeles Kings.
Reimer, who was in Montreal preparing for Toronto’s game later Saturday night, “figured something was up” when he was just about to take a pregame nap and saw a New Jersey area code pop up on his caller ID.
The Leafs have scored first just 19 times in 60 games this season and have an NHL-worst 10 wins when scoring first.
“I’ve said it before, there’s not much you can do about it”, Parenteau said after the Leafs game-day skate. He provided the Leafs with five years of NHL service time, but Reimer, who owns a career save percentage of.914, should fit in well as a complement to Martin Jones since he’ll be supported by the Sharks, who score 2.88 goals per game on average, now the fourth-best rate in the league. “You know as much as me”.
Reimer was traded to the Sharks on Saturday along with forward Jeremy Morin.
Stalock has played with the Sharks and their affiliate the San Jose Barracuda.
“Alex is a very special guy, both he and his wife”, Wilson said. Obviously, I had a lot of good years here. He needs the opportunity to play.
“He’s down a little bit in his confidence, but he’ll bounce back”. Down 1-0, going into the third, is a spot we don’t mind being on the road, especially with the way we had been playing up to that point.
“It seemed to work out pretty well”, Lamoriello said of the legendary netminder. With four sets of back-to-backs remaining this season, including Sunday in Vancouver followed by a Monday home against Montreal. The value of the UFA-to-be likely was higher earlier in the season, but diminished along with his shrinking save percentage (and ballooning goals-against average).
The trade also signals the end of Ben Smith’s run with the Sharks.
Unlike previous trades this month, which saw the club accumulate four draft picks, this deal was made with the intention of getting a longer look at young goaltenders in the organization, specifically 22-year-old Garret Sparks and perhaps even 21-year-old Antoine Bibeau.
On top of this, he was always a team first type of player. “The players and coaches have certainly earned with their efforts and performances for us to add some of these pieces to make us a better team”.
